BravinLee programs is pleased to present Draftants, the first exhibition dedicated solely to drawings by
Fabian Marcaccio.
Fabian Marcaccio has been widely exhibited in the United States, Latin America and Europe. Marcaccio is perhaps best known for his large-scale environmental paintings which fuse political, scientific and socio-economic content to hyper-materiality. In this exhibition, Marcaccio investigates the meaning of drawing, both its practical and conceptual aspects. Despite being known for works of mural size and scope, the intimacy of drawing has been central for all of Marcaccio's work. It is a cornerstone for him on all levels.
Marcaccio defines drawing as a space of uncertainty, where information exists only "in the form of a report, a sketch, draft, design, diagram or outline." Using drawing as a departure point, Marcaccio has developed the "draftant" as a space to make sense of this "multifunctional" practice. Just as the artist’s "paintants" create a platform for mutated and reanimated meanings and expressions in painting, Marcaccio's draftants exist simultaneously as analytic and compulsive. While Marcaccio's exhibition From Altered Paintings to Paintants at the Kunstmuseum in Liechtenstein and in Salamanca, Spain, had a strong focus on his conceptual drawings and his painting plans of the 90’s, this is his first exhibition of work solely devoted to his drawings. This exhibition will reveal aspects of his work that were always present by may be less familiar.
Executed on panels of sintra, a synthetic material that behaves like traditional paper-pulp like surface, Marcaccio draws, scratches, applies elements, prints and carves the surface -- all in the service of investigating the potential of drawing to convey a complex view of the world. Marcaccio's work confronts the issues that mark this "gangster-Capitalist" era: permanent globalized wars, profound lack of social justice, and the abuse of human rights.
In recent years, the artist has expanded his practice to include performance as in his "Pulsations" at AGO in Toronto in 2005, and has begun to work with animation as well. Marcaccio’s work was included in Documenta 11 and the 2006 Seville Biennial among other major international exhibitions, and is in numerous permanent collections including the Museum of Modern Art and The Whitney Museum of American Art.
