BravinLee Programs is pleased to present
Rebecca Morales: opening September 7 running through October 7, 2006.
Rebecca Morales works are executed in gouache on calf vellum. In her hyper-precise but sensual application of gouache Morales integrates finely rendered images of human hair, synthetic detritus, lichen, moss, and other parasitic flora. She writes, “My paintings address the process of decay as a curious place worthy of portraits. I am interested in images that are seductive and attractive. Maybe there is a repulsion that might emerge after looking at them for a moment.” Morales’ portraits are intellectually informed by the academic writings of nineteenth century naturalists, as well as by contemporary biologists E.O Wilson and Gordon Orians, and follow in the visual footsteps of animal and plant studies and encyclopedic illustrations of artists Albrecht Durer, Pieter Breugel and zoologist Ernst Haeckel (1843-1919). Morales attempts to visually explore the possibility of fusing together the human and natural worlds, conspicuously divided into two separate spheres by modernist scientific theory. “My paintings,” she states, “are a recognition of both realms presented as equally beautiful.”
Morales lives and works in Southern California. Her work has been included in exhibitions at the Riverside Art Museum, The Consulate General of Mexico, the Orange County Natural History Museum and Light Box LA, and can be found in the collections of The Contemporary Museum of Honolulu, Hawaii, and the Microsoft Corporation.
