Fogeys
June 8, 2006- July 8, 2006

Over the past 5 years,
David Stewart has worked on his series Fogeys creating a unique
body of work in it’s individual subject matter and printing process, the carbro* process,
which only two people in the world continue to do today.
On Thursday, June 8, 2006, Brenda Taylor will exhibit
David Stewart for the first time as
he brings his watercolor photographs using the carbro process to a larger audience. The
carbro process is unique in that it magnifies and adds depth to the colors of his prints,
emphasizing his unusual subject matter: older people behaving as adolescences, and his
sense of color. His method, though rare, is not new, as it dates back to 1863 with Louis
Ducos du Hauron, and was patented by Thomas Manly in 1905. This process however
did not truly make stride until Paul Outerbridge undertook the most expensive and
extensive research in color to date, bringing the carbro process not only to advertising but
also allowing for color originals to make photomechanical reproduction.
Several laborious hours of concentrated effort and financial investment go into making a
single Carbro-color print. It is unique among photographic processes because the
pigments used are the same as those in oil paint. Not only are the pigments unusually
permanent, having been tested for 500 years, but they also exhibit an extra-dimensional
quality, as the emulsion transfer process (done in 45 steps) creates shadows perceptibly
deeper and highlights that are finely graded.
Though technology allows for digital negatives to be transferred,
David Stewart
continues to use the film method, allowing for a thicker more lush layer of emulsion, and
therefore more depth and color in his prints.
* The Carbro process derives its name from the cross between carbon and bromide prints,
hence carbro.
