February 15, 2007- March 17, 2007
511 W 25th St
The
Brenda Taylor Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of new works by
Vanessa Oppenhoff. This is Oppenhoff’s first solo exhibition in the United States. Her work brings to light the current issues that infect our day to day lives. These current issues could be best described as epidemics that plague our contemporary environment. The title of the exhibition, “Upon People” comes from the greek word “epidemos” which translates as epidemics, Epi which means “upon” and demos meaning “people.” By incorporating both man and nature in her subject matter, Oppenhoff conveys their relationship and damaging interaction in the modern world.
Oppenhoff is able to express a serious and complex message through her sewing. Sewing, an art that typically relates to wholesomeness and motherhood, creates an interesting fusion of material and subject matter together. Each stitch weaves multifaceted concepts into simple lines of thread. The result is an image that is intimate and tantalizing.
Oppenhoff is a German-born artist that studied at Hochschule der Kuenste in Berlin. There she was appointed Meisterschueler in 2000. She has won several awards for her work in short film cinematography. Showing in both solo and group shows in Germany and New York, Oppenhoff surfaces these global issues bringing awareness to the art world.
