511 W 25th StOpening on July 19th 2007, the Brenda Taylor Gallery will be exhibiting the sculptural light environments of Florida based artist, Christine Desiree. Desiree’s work, which she describes as “chromotherapy paintings,” are created using the world’s most advanced technology in energy efficient LED’s, data enablers and DMX programming. Through this process her works are able to achieve over 16.7 million colors in their spectrum, and over 100 million color variations. The final result produces billions of individual compositions that are in a state of constant flux, modifying the gallery’s space into a transformative atmosphere.
A native of the Tampa Bay area, Desiree’s work bring to mind the seductive neon glow of the area’s nightclub and lounge scene. Taken out of this context and placed within the confines of an art gallery, one is reminded of minimalist works of the 1970’s by artists like Dan Flavin and Donald Judd. This (not-so) subtle paradox of influences serves as a sly comment on the assimilation of the avant-garde in contemporary culture. Desiree’s work transcends the static capabilities of these previous works by utilizing state-of-the-art technology to create compositions of ever-changing works of light, color and movement.
Vibrate is Christine Desiree’s first exhibition at the Brenda Taylor Gallery. The artist is a graduate of the Ringling School of Art and Design. She has lectured at the Sarasota Season of Sculpture “International Invitational Exhibition of Large Scale Outdoor Sculpture.” She has exhibited in the past with Greene Contemporary and was showcased at the Scope Hampton fair in 2006. This December, the Brenda Taylor Gallery will be exhibiting Desiree at the Bridge Art Fair in Miami.
