Caren Golden Fine Art is pleased to present Glove in Hand, a solo exhibition by Dutch/French artist Serge Onnen. For this, his first exhibition with the gallery, Onnen has created a body of work dealing with the values of consumerism and materialism. Onnen's media, which include hand-drawn stop-motion animation, works on paper and wallpaper, straddle the line between high and low art. Animation is movie-making, but not far removed from pulp or TV culture. Drawings are fine art, but become something else when mass printed as wallpaper. Onnen’s work questions how one determines the value of material goods, and of art itself, in our market driven culture.

In Glove in Hand exhibition, hands are everywhere. Wallpaper, drawings and videos all show hands busy with things. The dense mass of dismembered arms, with hands clutching forks, cameras, wallets and gifts all epitomize the claustrophobic intensity of today's obsession with material objects. The viewer both condemns the world of materialism and simultaneously recognizes the implication of his own culpability in the work. In his animation loops, Onnen's malleable figures morph and change, poking and prodding in a endless cycle of meaningless repetition. The ambiguity of the artist's intention triggers our imagination as we watch the hundreds of drawings transform into a few brief minutes of video.

Serge Onnen's work has been seen in solo and group exhibitions in Europe and the United States since 1996. His work was presented in the Hotel NY exhibit at P.S.1 in 2000 and in recent years in museum shows in Germany and Holland. Onnen has published four books, most recently Drawings on Geology which was published in 2005 in New York by J & L Books. He is a frequent contributor to Zing Magazine. Serge Onnen's work will be on view at The Drawing Center from February 25 through April 22, 2006.
