Caren Golden Fine Art is pleased to present RUSH, John Kalymnios's fourth solo exhibition with the gallery. RUSH is a continuation of the artist's interest in visual perception and nature, and the way the two intersect through memory and experience. As in all of his works, we are involved in a hallucinatory relationship with nature.
In previous works, John Kalymnios utilized motorized mechanisms and kinetic elements to create perceptual illusions of nature. In this body of work, perception of movement is conveyed through a distorted visual experience. 12X14, a large scale continuous screen of plastic magnifying lenses, hangs in front of a mural depicting a grid of repeating, concentric colored circles. As one views 12x14, the gridded image fragments, morphs and shifts in response to the distorting effects of the screen. The optical effect is achieved though the active participation of the viewer.
Also presented in RUSH are three video sculptures that depict digitally manipulated images of seascapes. Here, frenetic and chaotic views of familiar, placid natural landscapes confound the viewer’s expectations. Alternately, Eclipse further simplifies and abstracts our primal visual experience and imbues the natural phenomenon of a lunar eclipse with the notion of a spiritual void.
John Kalymnios's work has been praised in Art in America, Time Out New York, The New York Times, The San Francisco Examiner, The Kansas City Star, The Village Voice and Sculpture magazine. Most recently his work was presented in the solo exhibition, Out of Nature, at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City, MO.
