539 W 23rd StCaren Golden Fine Art is pleased to present Sweet To The Bone, Rasmus Bjørn’s first solo exhibition in New York.
Rasmus Bjørn's work questions the misleading character of representation. His paintings portray gang members and bikers wearing the stereotypical gear associated with these groups - hooded shirts, leather vests and jackets with sewn-on badges and semi-concealed weapons. At first glance the viewer assumes the individuals depicted are criminals, but a closer look at the badges reveals a unexpectedly softer side. Rather than the skulls, swastikas and satanic slogans that we might see in news articles about gangs and skinheads today, we are presented with advertisements for benign, non-existent products like Natures Helper and Pet Rescue, or messages of love and peace like Gentle Warrior and Victim of Love.
Our expectations are confounded again in Bjørn's sculptural works. Presented on floral painted shelves, baseball bats and hats hold associations with childhood games as well as gang violence. A painted MDF arcade machine entitled Baroque Inferno is emblazed with skulls and the word Vanitas, merging contemporary youth culture with high art. As in all of Bjørn's work, no impressions are stable. Reality depends on the perceptions of the beholder and the concept of truth has infinite subjective interpretations. Rasmus Bjørn's work has been widely exhibited in Denmark and Germany, and in the United States at The Armory and NADA art fairs. Throughout 2006 it will be presented in museum shows at The Museum of Contemporary Art in Shanghai, the Singapore Museum of Art, the Bruntlund Castle in Aabenraa, Denmark and the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Bjørn will be the subject of a solo installation in the 2006 LISTE Art Fair in Basel, Switzerland in June. A 50 page, full-color, hardbound book of his work will be published this coming summer.
