Tim Wehrle’s new work continues to explore dream narratives that dance between the visionary experience, music, and the politics of resisting marginalization.
His new drawings poetically unwrap the concept of a Cold War of the soul, in a new world where the artist-citizen is constantly acted upon by encroaching depersonalization but is able to resist and ultimately strike back utilizing dreams, visions and art making.
Wehrle’s style is evolving, becoming richer and more packed with metaphoricalimages and ideas. They are contemporary illuminated manuscripts whereby the drawings have internalized the prose without sacrificing the narrative. We can listen to these drawings as much as we can see them; they carefully control their synaesthesia. In a letter, Wehrle says he took it upon himself as an aesthetic exercise to make these drawings like hand-colored prints, where the composition is similar but there are subtle differences in color and mood.
He added that this group of drawings were influenced by cloud watching. In the second part of this exhibition we will be featuring new work by gallery artists Mort Golub, Jerry Wagner, Chris Hipkiss, Kevin Sampson, Keith Goodhart, Agatha Wojciechowsky, Emery Blagdon, and Sandra Sheehy. We will also be introducing work by Ed Nelson, who, on his land near Portland, Oregon, gathered the earth from under the runners of landed flying saucers, and ground it into healing pigments he called Stardust. He used the pigments to draw surreal and beautiful drawings of planetary events and the electromagnetic pulses of the earth. We will also show some rare drawings, diagrams and maquettes by legendary artist-inventor, John Sowell.
