The Art of Moroccan Textiles
May 8, 2008- June 21, 2008

Cavin-Morris Gallery is very pleased to announce that on May 8 through June 21st, the gallery will present an exhibition in friendship with
Gebhart Blazek of Austria, The Art of Moroccan Textiles. Included will be the amazingly serial and subtle natural dye kilims from the High Atlas Mountains, tantalizingly glimpsed in the opening scenes of the film Babel.
The minimalism of one of these striped and amuletically-motifed textiles is compelling, when seen as a group, the variations become significant and hypnotic. According to Blazek in his article in Hali 139, there was a brief window when the highest qualities of these pieces were available, and that window is now closed. This group is from his collection of that time and offers a rare opportunity for connoisseurs and contemporary painting lovers to get an insight into a rarely seen part of the ethnosphere.
Part of the compelling aspect of these textiles is the low-key but powerful ways they fulfill tradition and still indicate individual vision. The irregularities and variations in the undyed wool create landscapes incredibly evocative of the Atlas and totally different from those seen in the abrash rich textiles of another desert people, the Navajo in the American Southwest. Cavin-Morris has always reveled in the crossroads of place, genealogy, women's creativity, and artistic vision manifest in woven and embroidered and tie-dyed textiles from all parts of the world.
Also included in the exhibition's painterly theme will be shawls and cloths minimally dyed and marked with henna with talismanic intent for protection. In addition, a rare group of spectacularly colored tie-dyed shawls, too fragile to wear now, but enigmatic and vividly pigmented in expressionistic geometrics will be on view. We are fortunate to also present a men's ceremonial hooded mantle from the Ait Ouaouzgite Berber people.
