The fluid Expressionism of Pipaluk Lake and Per René Larsen stands in contrast to the more functional orientation of mainstream Danish Studio Glass. The organic qualities in the work of each artist are about experimentation - with the dynamics of glass and its abstract potential - another manifestation of the fascination with, and attentiveness to, the process of fabrication is very much a part of the Danish dedication to craftsmanship in all media,

Per-René Larsen, a pillar in the history of glass in Denmark, studied at The School of Arts and Crafts and Industrial Design in Copenhagen in the early 1970’s and then at the Orrefors Glass Factory. Per-René seems closer to the Expressionism that stemmed from the1940’s Danish COBRA (COpenagen, BRussels, Amsterdam) movement. He has chosen to remain somewhat out of the "studio glass mainstream", skeptical of the seductiveness of the material, and prefers working with poets - inspiring their work with his sculptures (for which they write poems) and with scientists - pursuing projects relating to energy conservation.

In his work, he seeks that spot where" the difference between utterly horrible and the incredibly beautiful is minimal!" For him glass is "a magical, grotesque and humorous world", its physics expressing much of nature: water/ice, lava/stones and in general most living plants and organisms are seen as aspects of the same physical images borne in hot glass.

For Per-Rene, "art is serious play." A solo exhibition of his work, "An Echo of Light" at the Ebeltoft Glass Museum, closed in December, 2005.

Pipaluk Lake began her work with glass after first studying carpentry and wood-carving and then textile design. She compares herself to a bespoke tailor, clipping pieces of sheet metal, bending, shaping and fixing them together to form a body, or binding metal around the glass to "sew" it together. "Heat-softened sheets of (window) glass can then be draped like textiles (and) the metal can be made to leave its mark on the glass, decorating the surface in a natural manner." For her, the process is a juxtaposition of "natural laws with the more undefined aspects of life." She refers to the organic forms and themes of Art Nouveau, the root of the modern Danish tradition, in addition to the Expressionism that prevailed in 1980’s Danish and German painting as influences on her work.

Whether inspired by nature or by fantasy, her sculptures - their jagged edges, organic deformation and color alchemy - appear to some critics as "almost apocalyptic", metaphors for disaster and destruction or expressions of the harsh realities of nature.

As with Per-René Larsen, she has had several solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions of Danish glass artists, the most recent of which "Glasss" 2004 (Holstebro Kunstmuseum, in Sophienholm) featured her work on the catalogue cover.

Chappell Gallery is pleased to present the first U.S. gallery exhibition devoted exclusively to Danish glass in the United States.
