Edward Burtynsky’s quest to photograph remarkable landscapes that have been reshaped by human industry has taken him to mines, shipbreaking beaches, shipbuilding yards, and monumental building projects. The
Charles Cowles Gallery is pleased to announce our exhibition of Burtynsky’s Quarries, in conjunction with a new book from Steidl. This body of work began in 1991 when Burtynsky traveled to the legendary Rock of Ages quarries in Vermont to explore the relationship between man, nature, and the idea of progress. He has subsequently traveled to Carrara in Italy, sculpture factories in China, and most recently Spain and Portugal in 2007. Using a large format camera to capture the compositions in situ, Burtynsky’s work is punctuated with remarkably rich detail.
In the artist statement accompanying his new book, Burtynsky describes his fascination with the subject:
I found an organic architecture created by our pursuit of raw materials. Open-pit mines, funneling down, were to me like inverted pyramids. Photographing dimensional stone quarries was a deliberate act of going out to try to find something in the world that would match the kinds of forms I held in my imagination but had never seen in real life – the idea of inverted skyscrapers.
Burtynsky’s work is included in distinguished museum collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, Ontario; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. His solo show,
Edward Burtynsky Photographs: Industrial Landscapes, is currently on view at the Gemeentemuseum, Helmond, The Netherlands through January 6, 2008 (www.gemeentemuseumhelmond.nl).
Edward Burtynsky’s work in China was recently the subject of a film, Manufactured Landscapes, directed by Jennifer Baichwal, which won the award for Best Canadian Feature Film at the 2006 Toronto Film Festival.
Edward Burtynsky – Quarries, a new book published by Steidl with an essay by Michael Mitchell, is available ($85).
