Charles Cowles Gallery is pleased to announce our first exhibition of ROBERTO JUAREZ's new paintings. In this body of work he continues his explorations of the relationship between order and disorder within the canvases. JUAREZ does this by setting linear visual parameters within his paintings (often in the form of grids and geometric shapes) and subsequently creating an interplay between the ordered line and the unruly brush stroke. Through his use of media, a sense of disorder by combining methods of collage, drawing, silk-screen printing, and, painting, JUAREZ creates a multiplicity of visual fields to engage the viewer. In his most recent work the layers shift positions and the underpainting asserts itself at the top and the grids and geometry receding to the level of support structure.
JUAREZ continues in the tradition of the abstract expressionists and color field painters letting the paint and color flow freely and automatically from his brush. His canvases have a strong graphic quality that is overlaid with a delicate layer of rice paper that mutes and softens the boldness of his gestures. On top of the rice paper, which is marked with a loosely worked grid, bifurcated circles line up to form shifting triangularities and circular formations. JUAREZ likens the patterns to the abstracted geometric images depicting the glory of heaven in Shaker “gift” drawings from the 19th century.
JUAREZ’s works are in distinguished museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Brooklyn Museum of Art, New York; and Miami Art Museum, Florida. He recently had a one-person exhibition at the Scarfone-Hartley Gallery at the University of Tampa in Florida and there is a catalogue available from the show.
