Tommy Fitzpatrick

Charles Cowles Gallery

537 W 24th St

In his fourth solo exhibition at the Charles Cowles Gallery, Tommy Fitzpatrick continues to explore the impact of urban architecture on contemporary life. Taking New York City as his subject, Fitzpatrick focuses on the convergence of architecture with a powerful consumer culture. The mirror-like surfaces of the curtain wall, prevalent in recent skyscraper construction, diffuse the complexity of the city reflected on the endless plates of glass. In this body of work, Fitzpatrick moves away from his previous approach to architecture strictly as a vehicle to investigate formal composition, color and light. Instead, as the title of the show suggests, Fitzpatrick tackles the broader issues inherent within his subject matter.

"In Fitzpatrick's hands," Christopher French writes in his essay for the recent Galveston Arts Center's catalogue, "the architectural style pioneered by Mies van der Rohe as one of the pivot points of modernism becomes both a window on the world and a funhouse mirror through which we can see the towering impersonality of our own present tense."

Commenting on the escalating consumerist expectations within our culture, Fitzpatrick’s paintings use reflections on windows to compress the myriad signs and lights that cover the surfaces of midtown structures. By making depth and scale hard to judge, the layers of information disorient the viewer by not offering a clear way to decipher the content.

Born in Texas, FITZPATRICK received his M.F.A. from Yale University, New Haven, CT, in 1993. His work is in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. He currently lives and works in Arlington, TX.
