China Previews Gallery is proud to present Ma Ye’s “My China Blues” series. Ma Ye is a graduate of the prestigious Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts, China, and has been long exhibiting his oil paintings in various invitational shows, including a feature at the National Art Museum of China. His delicate and gentle brush strokes paint together a scenic China that takes traditional Chinese brushwork and spins it into his own modern interpretation.
His work reminds us of a China prior to any revolutionary change, where things seemed stable and harmonious. His figures are a satirical play on the stereotypes created by foreigners on Chinese women, otherwise coined as the “China Doll” image. Their innocent eyes and playful facial expressions represent an intentional dull simplicity. Ma Ye continues to challenge the stereotypes as each “China Doll” suggestively hikes up her skirt. This demure seduction alludes once again to the traditional stereotypes one often associates with the Chinese culture.
“My China Blues” is saturated in a rich palette of light and dreamy blues and Ma Ye proves once again that traditional methods of artistry can still produce work that is quite contemporary. His satirical interpretations of Chinese stereotypes are painted in full view, showcasing his own unique sense of humor and play. Please join us for the opening reception on September 4th, 6-8pm.
