Christopher Henry Gallery is pleased to announce Spreepark, Lost Paradise,
Berlin a solo exhibition by New York-based photographer
Jimi Billingsley.
There is a quiet beauty in the images of this amusement park ghost town located just outside the former East Berlin. Today Spreepark sleeps, forced to close it doors in 2001. Stepping through the torn gate past the no trespassing signs, Billingsley takes the viewer on a private journey through the ruins of a dreamland. Once a source of pride and joy for the city, the abandoned rides now lie scattered across this surreal landscape like decaying monuments - faded memories of an impossible and elusive Utopian dream.
In this body of work Billingsley brilliantly captures this tension between what was and what is. The eerie stillness of Spreepark is a reminder of the fragility of that dream - the sad truth that life and the laws of nature are a tapestry of inescapable struggles.
Recently Billingsley’s photographs were featured in a solo show at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, CO. His work can also be found at the collection of the L.A. County Museum of Art.
