“He looked at his own Soul with a Telescope. What seemed all irregular, he saw
and shewed to be beautiful Constellations; and he added to the Consciousness
hidden worlds within worlds. “
- Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Notebooks
The
Christopher Henry Gallery is pleased to announce ”The Spiritual Life of
Imperfection,” its first solo exhibition of New York-based photographer
Thatcher Keats.
There is a spirituality in the imperfect world of Keats: he helps us to see, understand,
and accept the inescapable imperfection that is the human condition. In a chaotic
world dominated by the moving image, Keats’ work explores the transformation of
experience and being into a singular moment. These visual biographies have a
cinematic effect, drawing out fleeting moments into an endlessness of sensation
that becomes a permanent part of our conscious memory and awareness. Keats’
distilled essences of life serve as powerful graphic translations of culture, forming a
nonverbal language that changes the way we perceive our world. Lost in the shadow
cast by our conscious mind, Keats shines a light on the hidden, repressed, and
previously unseen aspects of our collective being.
