Claire Oliver Gallery is very pleased to announce the second solo
show of EVA & ADELE in our 26th Street Gallery.
"Angels, Devils and Sexmonsters" presents for the viewers pleasure a
new series of paintings deliberately provocative in their sexual
connotations. These new works consist of a complex set of intertwined surfaces which are set back and
forth against one another yet magically merge through the structure of a unifying palette. Provoking the
inquisitive eye, each painting contains a reductively abstract portrait of the artists, mischievously smiling
at the viewer, inviting him into the inner sanctum of their lives.
Inspired in part by the glamorous, transgendered characters from the1920’s redlight scene in Berlin,
omnipresent shaved heads and faces stylized with make-up, merrily perform explicit activities with
ungoverned self-confidence. These provocative new paintings and sculpture pose impudent questions
and reveal sexuality made up of man and animal, demonic creature and crooked finger. The viewer is
invited to experience life as exotic burlesque, full of energy and ecstasy, Angels, Devils and
Sexmonsters.
EVA & ADELE live and work in Berlin. Since 1990, they have become the artistic figure EVA & ADELE, which
they not only present in public view, but practice in their private life, 24 hours a day. Fusing together art
and life and challenging our ideas about art, gender and sexual identity, EVA & ADELE defy the
conventional description of what an artist is. They consider themselves a living artwork and astonish us
with their art of living, which they have demonstrated with courage and determination for almost 20
years. In addition to their performances, EVA & ADELE have created an important body of visual work
including painting, sculpture and video.
The concept of art and life as a unity is embodied in the Biographical sculpture No. 15. The costumes of
the artist couple are not only assembled as mirror-image, but also embrace each other, thereby forming
the infinital symbol.
Numerous solo shows had been dedicated to the work of EVA &
ADELE, among others in the Sprengelmuseum, Hannover (Germany);
The Nordic Watercolour Museum, Skärhamn (Sweden); Les Abattoirs,
Toulouse (France); Villa Aurora, Los Angeles (USA); Moderne Galerie
Saarland Museum, Saarbrücken (Germany); Neuer Berliner
Kunstverein, Berlin (Germany). In 2008 they will have an important solo
show in the Museum der Moderne Salzburg (Austria).
