Webster defines Empire as an extensive territory or enterprise under single domination or control. In “Empire of This,” five artists attempt to unravel the edges of fixed categories through narrative fantasies, distorted and displaced commentaries, and political imagery. Delving into their own vulnerabilities as a means of expressing thought, emotion, humor, and irony, these artists have very disparate sensibilities, yet each of their works is palpably ruled by the shock of this historical moment. “Empire of This” deals with politics, sexuality, aging, race, class and pop culture, documenting our history itself.
