Clementine Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of
James Franklin, Ignoring the Signs. The show will run May 25- June 24, 2006. A reception for the public will be held on Thursday, May 25, from 6-8 p.m.
James Franklin makes his New York solo debut with a collection of exquisitely detailed flashe and resin paintings. Saturated in deep jewel tones, and coated with a slick gloss of resin, Franklin’s canvases are seductively rendered windows into the psychological interiors of the suburban mind. By injecting a sense of unease into seemingly innocuous settings, Franklin points to the anxiety and awkwardness that lies just below the surface of his characters' humdrum lives.
Spare yet evocative, Franklin's compositions are marked by a kind of detached voyeurism. As such, the paintings read like a series of bizarre snapshots: Lovers copulate against a china cabinet; a man floats in a pool, clad only in bikini underwear; another kneels in prayer before a folding table and a rifle. Presented more as pictorial riddles than as complete narratives, Franklin's paintings successfully plumb the depths of the mundane and reveal the surrealism of everyday life.
