Clementine Gallery announces the opening of The Drips, an exhibition of new work by
Taylor McKimens. The show will run from September 7– October 14, 2006. A reception to the public and comic book release will be held on Thursday, September 7th, from 6-8 PM.
For McKimens’ second solo exhibition at Clementine, the artist has produced a new comic book titled The Drips that will be published by Picturebox Inc. in conjunction with the show. Tackling ideas of artwork as precious object and the relationship between comics and fine art, he will be using all the original artwork from the comic book to an entirely different end by re-mixing them into a single large-scale artwork. Also in the show will be previously shown artworks, destroyed and re-mixed, along with other new work.
Depicted with equal parts humor and pathos, the characters and imagery that populate McKimens’ work are based on his background and personal experiences. Interested in “everyday things that are loaded somehow”, McKimens invests iconic imagery with graphic sensibility and a keen eye for the tragic-comic. Drips, ooze, splatters, and sweat among other everyday objects (i.e. extension cords, water pipes, etc.) permeate this complex visual language, revealing both a penchant for the entropic and an ability to balance beauty and repulsion evenhandedly.
Taylor McKimens was born in 1976 and grew up in Winterhaven, California, a small desert town on the borders of Mexico and Arizona. His work was featured in P.S.1 MoMA’s Greater New York 2005, at Perugi Gallery in Padova, Italy, Annet Gelink Gallery in Amsterdam, and Deitch Projects in New York. In addition, a large-scale piece by McKimens was selected for Art Rock 2005 on the Plaza at Rockefeller Center. He will also be featured in a two-person museum exhibition at The Watari Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, Japan from October 2006. He lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
Art Reviews of The Drips
New York Times October 6, 2006 | | Roberta Smith | | "In his second solo show in New York, Taylor McKimens continues to balance ably between the not-always-aligned worlds of art and cartoons. He can work large or small, in two or three dimensions, and has developed a palette of slightly washed-out colors, redolent of a certain wear and tear, but also of comic books...." |
