For Lonesome Road,
Lee Baxter Davis presents twelve new works on paper. These works skillfully demonstrate his deep respect for drawing, as the technical sophistication of each piece manifests itself through delirious detail. Using ink and wash, with splashes of watercolor, Davis depicts deeply personal and profoundly complicated psychological narratives.
In this series, Davis evokes a South Western regional flare, complete with horses, cowboy boots, and cacti. Symbolically, he also explores the idea of the “lonesome road” as a reference to death. From his point of view, “we are all on the road going to the west” in the journey of life, to which the ultimate end is death. Using symbols and non-reductive detail, Davis confronts the existential fears of death through the subtle oddities and visual alchemies of his surrealistic images. In addition to an implied narrative structure, the works impart a strange comic and dream-like effect. In the uneasy balance of comedy and tragedy, Davis seeks to render that which exists but may not have specific form.
Davis recently participated in Clementine’s Lizard Cult group exhibition, which featured him alongside several of his former students. The retired Art Professor from East Texas State University (now A&M Commerce) currently lives and works in Greenville, Texas.
