Much madness is divinest sense
January 13, 2005- February 12, 2005
138 10th Ave
This show will feature an eclectic scope of work ranging from monumental wall drawings by Caitlin Masley and Dasha Shishkin, to small paintings and drawings on paper by Robert Gutierrez and Judith Eisler, to a large painting on paper in beet juice by Tam Van Tran. Included work focuses on various themes and ideas, ranging from architecture, nature, horror films and the figure.
The exhibition's title appropriates the first line of an Emily Dickinson poem, in which the writer compares madness and sanity: the convictions of the majority constitute reason and sense, whereas those who dissent are considered irrational and “wrong”. The text is a short and clear view onto the individual and his/her desire to express his/her own ideas in the face of societal pressure to conform. The artist, who creates and walks the proscribed path, is the ultimate vehicle of Dickinson’s divine madness.
