Takahiro Suzuki says, the word IKIRO means "Be alive" in English. He has been writing these words everyday as a project since '97 in different places around the world (Asia, Europe, Africa, USA etc.). Sometimes in Museums something on the street.
On a cold day of April 1 1996, he performed writing IKIRO at Washington Sq. Park in NY with a lot of IKIRO papers which cost him a year to write for preparation. At that moment he did not know if it would become a project in the future but just wanted to express himself in the public place with an installation art pieces on his body and he did.
After this performance he realized the actual writing of ‘IKIRO’ had become his own part of expression then he decided to continue writing IKIRO as year-long project. With his new focus on the plan, so has the project changed its style step by step. Conversation has also become an important part of the project. Plus he makes document videos of project too. Through the word IKIRO/Be alive many interesting people talk and think about life or art, and this is really the way project goes. In this exhibition he puts both of documentation and paintings in one place.
Takahiro Suzuki has been inspired by Joseph Beuys. He always tries to make possibility of not only a part of Contemporary Arts but also to create his unique spiritual ways. Sometimes writing IKIRO does not seem to make much sense in practical ways, but he believes his act stands for "what the art is and why we live here." He believes it is for the people and for the future. It may look simple, but has never been the same, as his hand writing changes everyday. Writing IKIRO has now become his life style and philosophy.
