Cynthia Broan Gallery is pleased to announce Hidden Mind, an exhibition of wall-mounted cast aluminum sculptures by German artist Bodo Korsig.

Organic abstract forms which appear to be tiny, anxious beings drawn by a nervous hand, are rendered as bold black metal wall reliefs. The sensitivity and uncertainty of Korsig's visual language become monumentalized, heightening the sense of contradiction in the process. Bodo's expressive forms have previously been executed as prints, encaustics, artist books, photography and wood sculpture. For this series, the shapes were first cut from wood panels, using a fine saw yet still in Korsig's distinctly rough hand. The deliberateness of the casting process enhances the imperfections, and the artist's significant use of rich, textured black is emphasized with the awareness of the metal beneath.

Bodo Korsig's abstract world is inhabited by oddly familiar shapes and feelings. A bleak yet willful sprout of something, a defiant biotic cell, a swirling cross-section of a scanned brain. . . they are living abstractions, playful and foreboding. Korsig's new series Hidden Mind further develops his interest in the mysterious intersection of mental and material existence, where the biological aspect of our thoughts and emotions is revealed, perhaps someday diagnosed. As studies of the brain reveal new understanding of perception, Bodo considers the formal scientific nature of love, memory, anguish and beauty, and how consciousness is so solitary yet so universal. His forms portray the potential for a biological survey of the psyche, each shape suggesting a specific node, virus, mutation or pollutant hidden in our mind.

Bodo Korsig was born in 1962 in Zwickau. He currently lives and works in New York and Trier, Germany. Bodo has exhibited extensively worldwide, including over thirty solo shows. He has received numerous awards and residencies, and his work is in the collections of several museums and libraries.
