DJT Fine Art is pleased to present Warhol: 20 Works, 20 Days, 20 Years Later, an exhibition of rare works on canvas, drawings, and prints by the contemporary art icon Andy Warhol. This exhibition will open on February 8th and run through February 28th and coincides with the twentieth anniversary of Warhol’s death. There will be an opening reception on Thursday, February 8th from 6 – 8pm.

There remains little doubt regarding the impact Andy Warhol had on the contemporary art scene of his day, nor of his lasting impact which remains to this day. With a firm belief in the communicative power of art, Warhol used his finely-honed cultural radar to barrel into the contemporary art world. A master of the business of fame, Warhol pulled society’s elite into the world of his aptly named “factory” while simultaneously reaching beyond the canvas to impact the worlds of film (more than 60 between 1962 and 1968), television (15 Minutes with Andy Warhol), music (producing for the Velvet Underground), and print (Interview Magazine)

Warhol: 20 Works, 20 Days, 20 Years Later will focus on two bodies of work to delineate the continued relevance of Warhol’s contributions and explore the timelessness of his art. The two bodies of work are the Diamond Dust Shoes series and the Myths series, a portfolio of ten screenprints, published in 1981. These two bodies of work mark the transition from the cultural upheaval of the seventies to the excess of the downtown eighties in a marked and profound manner. The shoes series recall Warhol’s first artistic success as a freelance illustrator in the fashion industry. His blotted ink shoe drawings from the 50’s became a staple of high-end fashion advertising. The Diamond Dust shoe works, on both paper and canvas, date from the late 70’s into the early 80’s. The glittering surface of these pieces aligns perfectly with the aesthetic devices of the disco era witnessed first hand at Studio 54 where Warhol was a regular. The second series, entitled Myths, is one of the more subtly provocative subjects Warhol ever endeavored upon. In this portfolio he explores the nature of myth as it applies to the American cultural landscape. Icons such as Howdy Doody, Dracula, and Santa Claus are profiled alongside more weighty symbols such as Mammy, The Star (Greta Garbo as Matahari), and the shadow, cast by Warhol himself. DJT Fine Art has obtained the graphite drawings used to produce the original screens and will display them alongside the prints from the original published edition.
