Sets (part III)
November 30, 2006- December 23, 2006
525 W 22nd St
D’Amelio Terras will present a three-part exhibition of visual artists who also maintain
separate practices as musicians, both modes of expression strongly informing one another.
Bjorn Copeland, Brian Chippendale, and
Hisham Akira Bharoocha all have a spontaneous,
organic sound to their music which is mirrored in their visual art practice. The chosen
format of three rapidly successive exhibitions references the structure and energy of sets
at a musical event.
The exhibition will highlight each artist’s unique practice while creating a dialogue among
them. Bjorn, Brian, and Hisham all have strong roots in the city of Providence and have
been influenced by a certain aesthetic of immediacy of expression as well as bright, optical
form and color — both visually and musically.
Bjorn Copeland is a co-founder and member of Black Dice, a band that has played at such
venues as Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain, Paris, France and the Walker Art Center,
Minneapolis, MN. Bjorn has shown at Daniel Reich, New York and has an upcoming solo show at
China Art Objects, Los Angeles, CA. He is currently included in the exhibition Music is a
Better Noise at PS 1, New York, NY. Gore, a book by Black Dice and Jason Frank Rothenberg and
published by Picturebox Inc. will be available during the exhibition.
Brian Chippendale is a co-founder and member of Lightning Bolt, a two-person band based in
Providence. He has published numerous zines and comics and is a co-founder of Fort Thunder,
a formative living/ art/ music/ performance space no longer in existence. Brian’s work can
currently be seen in Wunderground: Providence, 1995 to the Present at The RISD Museum,
Providence, RI. A new book of his comics published by Picturebox Inc. will be available
during the exhibition.
Hisham Akira Bharoocha was a member of both Lightning Bolt and Black Dice and now plays solo
under the name Soft Circle and with his band Pixeltan. Hisham has been included in shows at Deitch
Projects and John Connelly Presents. He was recently included in Cosmic Wonder at Yerba Buena
Center for the Arts, San Francisco, CA and has an upcoming solo show at De Vleeshal, Middelburg,
the Netherlands and will be included in a show at The Watarium Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, Japan.
