Gornik 2005
November 17, 2005- December 7, 2005

Danese is pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings by April Gornik opening November 18 and continuing through December 23.
Central to this body of work is the artist’s incomparable ability to present light as a vehicle that evokes an emotional and psychological response to the natural world. Dominant images in this exhibition, “sea” and “sky”, function both literally and metaphorically and convey the impact of light through continually changing conditions: dawn, the brilliant clarity of a sunlit sky, sunset, a fog-bound shore, and the drama of an approaching storm — muscular rolling clouds that seem pregnant with dark premonitions of some grand narrative unfolding. 1
The exhibition also includes paintings generated by Gornik’s recent journey to China which demonstrate an intuitive response to the pallid and ethereal light often associated with this distant land. With their tranquil bays and lagoons, these works recall Barbara Novak’s observations regarding Luminist painting:
When we see pockets of still water … we may speak of a contemplative idea, a refuge bathing and restoring the spirit and of a compositional device marrying sky and ground by bringing the balm of light down to the earth on which the traveler stands. 2
Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1953, April Gornik received her BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. A recent mid-career survey organized by the Neuberger Museum of Art, SUNY/Purchase, NY traveled to the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Halifax, NS and the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery, Lincoln, NE. Her work is included in major private and museum collections throughout the United States. Gornik has received a Lifetime Achievement in the Arts award from Guild Hall Academy of the Arts and the Award of Excellence for Artistic Contributions to the Fight Against AIDS from amFAR. April Gornik lives and works in New York.
