Daniel Cooney Fine Art

511 W 25th St

Daniel Cooney Fine Art is proud to announce our second exhibition by British artist Michael Whittle. The exhibition, titled The Louder the Sun Blooms consists of ten new ink drawings inspired by Dylan Thomas’s Poem on his Birthday. The artist continues his exploration of combining scientific, historical and poetic references hidden in finely crafted and detailed drawings.

Dylan Thomas once claimed that his poetry was the record of his individual struggle from darkness toward some measure of light. Whittle started this series of drawings with the theme of “light and vision” which soon evolved to “vision and division”, the biological separation of the image we see into two distinct passages of information from our eyes to the visual centers of the brain (i.e.: binocular vision). In a poetic sense the idea of vision and the process of splitting the image we perceive has become the central theme of the exhibition.

The artist is a trained and former practitioner of biochemistry. After a short career as a scientist he returned to college as an art student and eventually earned an MA in sculpture from the Royal College of Art in 2005.

Whittle has exhibited in London at the Laura Bartlett Gallery and at Kyoto University, Japan where he studied in 2004. He is the recipient of the Kyoto City University of the Arts Scholarship, the Daler Rowney RCA Drawing Prize and the Farquhar Reid Trust Art Prize.
