Maria Pergay 2008

Demisch Danant is pleased to present a collection of works by
Maria Pergay dating from 1960 to the present. The exhibition includes Pergay's design objects in silver, examples of early furniture in stainless steel, and is highlighted by three of her most recent works, on view in New York for the first time.
Continuing to explore her longtime passion for stainless steel and the material's potential, the new work exhibits a master level of achievement and confidence. The work conveys a capricious humor, a balance between sculpture and function and maintains an artisanal standard of excellence. 'Broken Cabinet (2007)' appears to have been split in two, with metal shards in relief superimposed on every surface masking its uniform function as a cabinet. 'Ribbon Pouf (2007)' exhibits Pergay's ability to bend steel like silk and to portray a delicate form while disguising its actual strength.
Maria Pergay is recognized for her 40 years of devoted work in stainless steel. Her designs have evolved both artistically and technically, from the minimal forms of the late 1960s to the complex and intricately detailed structures of her most recent designs.
