Joan Didion's The White Album, said one critic, helped to define California as "the paranoid capital of the world." In DIG,
Wayne Smith and
D-L Alvarez, who both grew up in California, examine the impulse to unearth meaning. It seems to be in human nature to simplify information only to later expand upon it; we melt ideas down to an essence, then theorize this essence into volumes of explanations. What then, is the meaning of meaning.
Using The White Album as a starting point, Smith and Alvarez dig into various west coast surfaces and sift determinedly through them: a paragraph of Didion's famous essay which describes the music scene in LA in the late-Sixties, a western movie set which references both Hollywood and the home camp of the Manson Family, images of the redwood forest that are nearly obliterated under a grid (a symbol of organizing information), and a grassy bank of the Russian River that is literally dug into ? an action referencing earth works, grave digging, labor, and archeology.
This will be
Wayne Smiths' first time showing with the gallery.
D-L Alvarez's upcoming solo exhibition Parents' Day, will be presented in September 2007.
