Todd Knopke

Derek Eller Gallery

615 W 27th St

Todd Knopke's new wall hangings are composed of pieces of fabric ranging from luscious bits of high end cashmere and raw silk to used jeans and shirts gathered from thrift stores and friends. Knopke uses fabric because it is a universal yet personal medium, owned and interacted with by everyone on a daily basis. This very common ordinary material is used to make images of equally common moments that hopefully take on extraordinary presence and potential. From the magical bird, referencing Felicite's parrot in Flaubert's A Simple Heart, swooping in to bring something new to the dazed man it appears before in his piece entitled Coming, to the person who discovers a cavernous other world through a shattered surface in My Self, Knopke?s images express self-discovery and hope.

This will be Knopke's first solo exhibition with the gallery.
