Dillon Gallery introduces the paintings of
Chen Wenguang, a major Chinese painter whose unique blend of painting techniques captures an aesthetic that moves beyond the Chinese and regional, into a new global dialogue. This is his first solo exhibition in the United States.
The exhibition will be composed of four monumental paintings, created using oxidized mineral pigments along with silver and gold leaf. Using this “Nihonga” approach (layering of the mineral pigments and metal leaf) and traditional Chinese painting, the abstracted image of a single lotus is floated against a luminescent surface. Chen has picked up an artistic thread dating from the Tang Dynasty [618 – 907] in China, when mineral pigment dominated. He has revived its application by re-introducing the technique in a contemporary presentation.
Chen surpasses the individual techniques of both Chinese and Japanese painting tradition, employing a baroque approach to both the materials and subject. Chinese and Japanese critical attention has acknowledged his substantial contributions and ground-breaking technical innovations to the Nihonga tradition. His work is included in many museums and collections in Japan and China, including the Sato Museum, Daiichi Museum and his recently acclaimed solo exhibition at the Guangdong Museum, in China.
Mineral pigment painting that was once so prominent in the Tang Dynasty had been lost in China, but survived to become the national painting in Japan. By re-introducing this lost technique to contemporary Chinese students,
Chen Wenguang has provided a significant link in the history of Chinese and Japanese art.
Dillon Gallery is proud to present these four extraordinary works of art to a Western audience.
