Dillon Gallery is proud to announce the upcoming solo exhibition of acclaimed artist
Ed Baynard.
As a master watercolorist for the last 35 years, Baynard has perfected his vocabulary. This contemporary
era of his work contains his classic imagery in a vibrant new medium - acrylic on canvas. These mature
works, "Greatest Hits," are an intimate distillation of his life's work. The restrained still lifes are painted in
an unsentimental and sophisticated approach. His canvases echo the quiet intellectualism that one finds in
the compositions of Morandi. His floral works reference the Japanese aesthetic as well as that of the early
20th century American Modernists.
In the current exhibition Baynard has incorporated all his themes: the shelf, the pots, the white background
he pioneered, and his flowers, sitting below trompe l'oeil blocks of color. These paintings remind the viewer
to stop and take note of the details and reoccurring themes of nature and geometry.
"Beautiful painting is alive and well in New York City. Baynard's flowers are not simply flowers, but
portraits redolent of the full realm of human possibility. Erotic, seductive and sometimes evil, there is the
full range. He is best known for his paintings of flowers and this show, dedicated to floral still lifes,
illustrates why." - Karen Wright, Bloomberg, March 2007.
This is Baynard's second solo exhibition at
Dillon Gallery. The artist's work can be seen in such collections
as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Guggenheim
Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, the Tate, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, High Museum of
Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Walker Art Center, among others.
