Performance - Painted Music
November 8, 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
555 W 25th St
Dillon Gallery is pleased to present the New York premiere of a multimedia performance by composer/pianist Jerzy Sapieyevski and painter
Makoto Fujimura. Fujimura’s musical gesture of painting and his artistic expression will blend with the award-winning composer’s colorful piano virtuosity. "Painted Music" is a multimedia event in which the painter - in live performance – creates musical sounds in the process of painting. The canvas will become his instrument, the brush - the means to create the music. Set against the counterpoint of the piano composition, Fujimura’s brush will generate a variety of rhythmic tones and rich sonorities. While his painting evolves visually in the presence of the audience, the musician and painter are able to transcend their primary artistic forms, merging into a new genre of art.
.
The performance of "Painted Music" will be filmed by cinematographer Mott Hupfel to capture the captivating, visual and musical dialogue between the pianist and the painter.
The composer has been inspired by three artistic pioneers: Russian abstractionist Wassily Kandinsky, who experienced color through music; the Spanish Surrealist Joan Miró, who often began his artistic journey by allowing a painting to “assert itself,” and finally, the American Abstract-Expressionist Jackson Pollock, who practiced a process of “action painting.” Sapieyevski’s design is a moment-specific, multi-layered composition in a performance format that transforms the relationship between musicians, artists, and the public. His music, or “sound sculptures” unite diverse artistic styles into a unique creation drawn from the ambiance and interaction with the gesture and rhythm of painting.
A true interactive collaboration between an artist, musician, and cinematographer, “Painted Music” is a visionary inquiry into post-modern artistic expression. Committed to innovative artistic collaborations,
Dillon Gallery presents projects to audiences in a continuing effort to explore the contemporary art landscape. A dynamic artistic experience, "Painted Music" is an integrated arts offering for the 21st century, and an uplifting journey into the new era.
Seating is limited.

Early on, he recognized the potential of music technology and was one of the first musicians to integrate the digital sounds in traditional concerts. Sapieyevski is especially interested in creating interactive works that bring together live events and the artistic use of technology. His "Concerto for Piano Solo and Computer" involves a new technique of composition that allows a system of multiple computers to interact with live performers. Sapieyevski’s commissions and performances include the Kennedy Center, Library of Congress, Carnegie Hall, and numerous radio and television programs. He is a recipient of several international awards.
