Baynard’s classic imagery represents the pinnacle of his fourth decade as an expert watercolorist. The medium and subject matter, for which the artist is best known, succeeds the artistic legacy of Demuth and Morandi, and has established Baynard as one of the finest still life painters of our time. The paintings, measuring thirty by forty inches, are being exhibited unframed in order to reveal the artist’s mastery. His lyrical flowers, purchased at the 28th Street Flower Market, embody an intensely personal world, yet one that also reveals an awareness of the collective human experience. The artist’s precision of form imparts familiar subject matter with renewed vigor and highlights his exceptional skill as a colorist.
This is Baynard’s first solo exhibition in New York dealing exclusively with still life and flowers since 1986. The artist’s work can be seen in such collections as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, New York, Guggenheim Museum, New York, Victoria and Albert Museum, the Tate, London, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, High Museum of Art, Atlanta, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Walker Art Center, among others.
