"A sleeping man wakes in the night ready to sing hymns read psalms read his own palms all psalms are prayers wrung out of desperate people I'm not the first to be nailed to this killing floor my bed of nails is the luxury version fashioned from wooden dowels. Who invented the bed of nails? Does the thumbscrew have a patent? There remains something solid holding me up, the backbone and the backbone flute the sound of that flute extracting a melody a melody that becomes a remedy."
