DINTER FINE ART is pleased to present a solo exhibition of recent paintings and works on paper by New York artist
Judith Hudson, titled "Flying Dutchman".
The works in this exhibition expand on Ms. Hudson's artistic explorations while collaborating with her husband Richard Price on the limited edition artists book "Flying Dutchman", published by Carpe Diem Press, Oaxaca, Mexico.
Primarily on paper, but recently also on canvas, the works in this exhibition seem to sail along the rich and undulating contours of the ocean floor, before transitioning into realms of abstraction. These works, suggestive of summer and heat and storms, invite entry into a world containing the billowing lightness of daydreams. Then again, the works are caught up by some of the more formal constraints of contemporary abstract art-making, mixing randomness and control in a thoroughly modernist mode. The collaged layers of paper and canvas create depths and dimensions, fields of color and texture, with foregrounds and backgrounds, melding and interweaving, into a full slate of color and form. The abstractions melt into landscape, echoing natural phenomena such as weather, water and wind.
In an unlikely creative effort, Ms. Hudson and Mr. Price join forces to combine his lush prose descriptions of a harsh but exotic urban environment with intense colors and spiraling movements anchored deep in Ms. Hudson's abstract imagery. Mr. Price takes a walk on Manhattan's Lower East Side and Ms. Hudson trails, charting his progress.
Judith Hudson has exhibited her work at various venues including The Drawing Center, New York (2005, 1982, 1980); Marlborough Gallery, New York (2000, 1996); P.S.1, Long Island City (1997, 1992, 1984); The New Museum, New York (1982); Kansas City Art Museum, Kansas City (1972); to mention a few. Her work is represented in many public and private collections.
Richard Price is a novelist and screenwriter, whose books include "The Wanderers" (1974; movie 1979); "Bloodbrothers" (1976); "Freedom Land" (1998; movie 2006); "Clockers" (1992; movie 1995); and whose new novel "Lush Life" will appear in March 2008. His screenplay credits include "The Color of Money" (1986); "New York Stories 'Life Lessons"' (1989); "Sea of Love" (1989); "Mad Dog and Glory" (1993); and "Ransom" (1996).
The exhibition remains on view through Friday, December 21.
