On view at 529 West 20th Street from May 19 through July, the show comprises ten 81x52 inch cibachrome prints. In these dramatic photographs of whirling flowers, Beckley continues his dialog with American painting in terms of content and scale. His conceptual work of the 1970s referenced Stella and Warhol;photographs of rose and violet stems circa 1974 paid homage to Barnett Newman; and this series relates to the coloristics and sublime allusions of Mark Rothko. It is breakthrough work for this veteranartist, whose last show in New York was in 2001 at Tony Shafrazi Gallery.
Bill Beckley began exhibiting his photographs in the late sixties, and was at once internationally recognized as the originator of Photo-Text art. He first showed in New York at the legendary 112 Greene Street Gallery with Gordon Matta-Clark, Louise Bourgeois, and Barry La Va.
Solo shows followed at the Hans Mayer Gallery and Konrad Fischer Gallery, both in Dusseldorf Germany; Rudolf Zwirner in Cologne; Yvon Lambert in Paris; Lucio Amelio in Naples Italy; Nigel Greenwood in London; and in New York at John Gibson Gallery, the Museum of Modern
Art, and the International Center of Photography. He has been included in the Whitney Biennial, the Venice Biennial, and Documenta in Kassel, Germany. His works are found in important museums andprivate collections around the world.
As one of the first artists to use large-scale color photography in fine art, Beckley is an important influence on artists as Cindy Sherman and Richard Prince. Roberta Smith acknowledged Beckley'scontribution in New York Times articles of 1992 and 2007.
Beckley's work will be on exhibition at
Dorfman Projects through July. It may also be seen this June with Hans Mayer Gallery at the Basel Art Fair; at the Park Ryu Sook Gallery in Seoul Korea in July, and at Bruna Soletti Gallery, Milan, Italy in October 2007.
