Andrea Frank: new photographs
December 15, 2006- January 27, 2007
210 11th Ave
Andrea Frank will show twelve new photographs based on visits to worldwide ports, capturing ships for this photographic series. In this exhibit, she has focused exclusively on European ports.
Taken as a whole, it is a visual roster of the maritime giants in today’s global market. Individually, each is a unique portrait that speaks to the many dichotomies and contradictions of modern technological innovation. For the artist, these massive and stunning constructions are as beautiful in appearance as in purpose.
To photograph these ships, the artist approaches at water level: in this way, she emphasizes the monumentality of her subject and the vastness of its capabilities, its power, and, conversely, its vulnerability.
Andrea Frank was born in Germany and lives and works in New York and Cambridge, MA, where she teaches photography and related media at M.I.T. She has exhibited in the US and internationally. This will be her first exhibition with the
Edward Thorp Gallery.
Art Reviews of Andrea Frank: new photographs
New York Times January 26, 2007 | | Roberta Smith | | "The huge volumes of these ships loom against the sky, foreshortened and truncated into unexpected geometries. The persistent effect is of being uncomfortably near a height-challenged hunter closing in on an elephant...." |
