Peter Waite will exhibit twelve new, large multi-paneled paintings, acrylic on plastic panels.
Experiencing and remembering are at the heart of
Peter Waite’s paintings. The concept of travel motivates the artist to reassess his perception of what it means to see, both far and near, at home and abroad. In remembering, he experiences and vice versa.
Unpopulated architectural landscapes of England, interiors, stately homes, dining rooms, and swimming pools are rendered both realistically and impressionistically in this new body of work. Technically, they mirror an elusive blurring effect through the use of marks that measure, draftsmans’ laser marks, builders’ snap lines, and other surface-referencing gestures and drips. This technique affirms through contradiction the persistence of memory over fact.
As the artist does, we visit and revisit these paintings, and because of their scale they do become sites in themselves, and we therefore experience differing responses. Is it familiarity, is it the romantic impulse, nostalgia, a memory of previous visits, and is it an exploration, fact or fiction?
Peter Waite’s paintings rest flat against the wall, giving the works an immateriality while accentuating the transformative and contra positional qualities of his images. As these large evocative paintings wrap themselves around us, we experience them as a theatre of place and memory, beauty and familiarity.
This will be
Peter Waite’s fifth exhibit with the
Edward Thorp Gallery.
