Daniel Blaufuks comes from a Polish/German family that immigrated to Portugal
mid-century. This background relates to his childhood dream of becoming a “tourist” when asked what profession he wanted to choose as a grown-up. As an artist photographer now he reflects on being “in between spaces,” suggesting layered meanings and a nomadic sense, as much as always thinking of the next shot and the next place, rarely the last. Blaufuks’ images and videos of motel rooms recall the “film noir,” sometimes even scenes from films by Hitchcock, always suggesting mysteries and stories behind ‘simple’ images of a hotel key in its lock, a neon sign of the motel’s name, a view through a window…

Daniel Blaufuks remarks: “Photographers and travelers are searchers, but they also know they will never find what they are searching for, an unreachable horizon that is always in front of the eyes, but never within reach”.
Daniel Blaufuks is a winner of the National Kodak Award and was recently nominated for the BES Award for artistic photography in Portugal. His work has been shown at the Gulbenkian Foundation and the Museu do Chiado in Lisbon, at the Lincoln Center and the Goethe Institute in New York, as well as the Chelsea Art Museum, New York and Reina Sofia Museum, Madrid, among other places. This is his second solo show with Elga Wimmer. More info at
