The
Elizabeth Harris Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new work, including an installation titled, The Rhapsody of Chaos by
Lisa Hoke. The Gallery is located at 529 West 20 th Street , 6 th floor, and is open Tuesday through Saturday 11 -6. There will be a reception for the artist on Thursday, February 8, from 6-8 pm.
The Rhapsody of Chaos , a “snapshot” of the merging of light with a spectrum of colored filter gel boxes, results in unexpected three dimensional reflections. This installation evokes the late December light in the artists studio from 3:15 to 3:30 pm. Hoke says, “as the sunlight rakes across the gels, it was like watching a pile of sticks ignite.” As in Hoke's most recent installations, there is conditional interplay of ephemeral materials that coexist in a finite space and time.
The Houston Press writes of Hoke's recent installation, Light My Fire, at Rice University Gallery “Hoke turned the gallery's 16 x 44 foot window wall into a color-soaked, stained glass panel using colored paper and glue. It fills the viewer's field of vision, turning into a trippy wall of light, evoking cinema.” For Hoke, the pooled reflection of color on the highly polished marble floor created an aurora borealis-like phenomenon, inspiring The Rhapsody of Chaos .
In a concurrent installation at the Montclair Museum of Art, “Moody Blues, Reds and Yellows”, February 10-August 5, 2007 . Hoke uses a filter gel construction in a windowed stairwell. Gail Stavitsky, the curator, describes
Lisa Hoke's piece as “ reflecting both seasonal and daily changes in light, which alludes to Hoke's preocupation with “ the mortality of time”.
