529 W 20th StThe Elizabeth Harris Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by Jane Schiowitz.
This will be Jane Schiowitz’s first exhibition in two years. Joseph Walentini wrote in AbstractArtOnline of her last show, “If these diminutive abstract paintings were literature they would represent a collection of short stories reminiscent, perhaps, of Raymond Carver. They possess a similar dashed-off bittersweet quality that is at once humorous with a hint of the tragic…… At first you may be tempted to not take these paintings seriously. But give them just a bit of time and they begin to draw you into their complex little worlds.” Ken Johnson states in The New York Times, “The experience is at once impersonally formal and seductively intimate.”
This new body of work continues in this vein but Schiowitz introduces larger scale paintings along with the more familiar smaller work. When asked about this new group of works Ms. Schiowitz writes: “My work explores figure/ground relationships, and the interrelation of form, line color and surface. It is characterized by a painterly approach to abstraction and a loose, freehand drawing style. I arrive at the structure of each piece, working and reworking its elements until the painting is reduced to its final, essential state. At times I allow the natural flow of my materials to determine the direction of my work; at other times I impose a certain amount of structure. This give and take is integral to my work.”
