In an excerpt form his catalog essay Jonathan Goodman states:
“Steve Currie, the Brooklyn sculptor based in Williamsburg, constructs wooden-and-silicone pieces that convey an informal, improvisatory approach to art, at the same time putting across a considerable degree of complexity. These seemingly conflicting attributes in his work are unified and even redeemed by a sharp sense of form, which infuses his subtle, intricate art. In a general sense there is something of the biological invested in the work – the viewer can see that the clusters of silicone balls, tightly contained by wire, look very much like a representation of DNA or the synaptic patterns of the nervous system.”
“The artist comes across as a master tinkerer, playing with questions about density and sparseness in space, as well as considering how structures of support in sculpture can be made into significant three-dimensional presences themselves. Mostly, it is Currie’s inquisitive explorations in form that we see, for he creates resilient and elegant pieces out of the humblest of materials.”
In his new work Currie continues to explore materials by introducing expandable silicone, allowing for a linear fluidity previously hinted at in earlier work. It now becomes more readily apparent.
Accompanying the exhibition there is a fully illustrated 12 page color catalogue with an essay titled, Steve Currie: Improvisation, Complexity, and Form by Jonathan Goodman.
