The
Elizabeth Harris Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition titled babel in brooklyn by
Daina Higgins. This exhibition will be her second with the gallery.
In a recent statement describing her work
Daina Higgins writes:
“The title babel in brooklyn refers to the polyglot of Coney Island Avenue, Fifth Avenue in Hispanic Sunset Park and Eighth Avenue in Brooklyn’s Chinatown that are the settings for these paintings. Here in Brooklyn are long boulevards with a distinctly mom and pop retail character. Shops have a quirky identity. This brings a sense of clannish-ness that seems diametrically opposed to the plurality of cultures. The impetus for this approach to thinking about the city is Walter Benjamin’s The Arcades Project, a distinctly non-linear and therefore quite postmodern view of the mechanics in urban life.”
In Higgins’ new paintings she leaves behind her familiar spraypaint and stencil technique, instead opting for the more traditional oil and brushes. With the newfound freedom that oil paint gives her, Higgins moves forward into the landscape, zooming in, composing her images using shop windows, banners, architectural details and interiors as subject matter.
Daina Higgins was born in Columbus, Ohio. She lives and works in Brooklyn. She received her BFA from the School of Visual Arts in 2001 and is presently working on her MFA at Queens College. In 2007 she received a New York Foundation for the Arts Individual Grant.
