Realism intersects with Symbolism in the work of
Jared Buckhiester. Gifted
with
a strong visual memory, Buckhiester is able to revive a very specific
atmosphere from his youth. He does so through imagery that reflects bizarre
and
powerful visions of intimacy, vulnerability and menace.
Much in the tradition of the classical draftsman, subjects such as
landscapes
and interiors are re-visited, be it with a twist. Buckhiesterıs patiently
rendered drawings of sensitive landscapes, and fantastic scenes that teem
with
teenage outcasts, are infused with deep spiritual feeling. Highly
individualized
motifs such as lonely houses in the middle of nowhere and Deep South
suburban
misfits form just some of the structures through which his work addresses
social and moral consciousness.
Sporting an endearing smile, one is drawn by the fairytale quality of the
work,
only to quickly take a step back, as having been somehow surprised in the
midst
of some diabolical activity.
By hinting at the dangerous allure behind an assumed appearance, the artist
explores the mystery and fantasy underlying the surface reality, but he does
so
with a sense of humor and a lightness of being, insuring that acceptance,
can be
found in each piece.
Buckhiesterıs drawings evoke the suspicion with which he seems to regard
both
his fellow man and the inanimate objects that surround him. He treats the
phenomenon of pain related to sexuality with incredible tenderness. His mix
of
sexual innuendo and theological references should make the work disturbing
or
difficult, but it is intimate and tender at the same time, which makes it
captivating instead.
Jared Buckhiester grew up in a Southern Baptist community in Dahlonega, near
the
North Georgia Mountains and moved to NYC in 1995. He graduated from Pratt
Institute in 1999.
This is the first solo show of the artistıs drawings. His first European
solo
exhibition will be at Galerie du Jour Agnès B in Paris, France from 28
October
thru 2 December 2006. A book of the artistıs work will be published by envoy
mid-September 2006
