Kennedy: Inside / Outside
February 28, 2006 - March 25, 2006
Reception: March 11, 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm
526 W 26th St
Inside / Outside, a solo exhibition of paintings by Tim Kennedy, will appear at First Street Gallery from February 28 to March 25. The show reflects upon aspects of quotidian domesticity. The paintings are a series of intimate interiors and yard landscapes peopled by figures engaged in everyday domestic activities. This is Mr. Kennedy’s fourth solo exhibition at First Street Gallery.
Kennedy’s paintings fall solidly into the tradition of painterly American realism that prizes the particular. Essentially plotless, they are about the sharply experienced, yet ordinary, moment. The unspoken character at the center of all the paintings in the exhibition is the craftsman bungalow in which Mr. Kennedy lives and in which most of the paintings are set. These person scaled paintings convey direct contact with their subjects and are filled with light and air. Dancers, card players, people on a porch at night are all interrupted in their trajectory and, in the end, act as a mirror for the viewer.
