Carl Plansky: Oil Paintings
October 12, 2006- November 11, 2006
210 11th Ave
The
Fischbach Gallery is pleased to present Oil Paintings, recent works by
Carl Plansky opening 12 October and continuing through 11 November 2006. Oil Paintings is his third solo exhibition with the
Fischbach Gallery.
Bordering on abstraction,
Carl Plansky’s paintings continue to evoke the innate tension between stability and movement. These new series of paintings have been influenced by the large amount of time Plansky recently has spent in Budapest. Whether flowers, landscapes, or figures, Plansky transposes his impressions onto the canvas with such an intense, swirling effect that the viewer is virtually hurled into his whirlwind compositions. Plansky’s assured handling of oil paint and his obvious enjoyment of his medium’s spontaneous effects lend his work this great drama and immediacy.
Applying paint with brooms, rags, and a plasterer’s trowel, Plansky uses brash, voluptuous strokes to build up his paint so that certain areas of his paintings are thickly encrusted while others almost bare. From different angles his paintings appear to be palettes themselves. The activated surface of the canvases work to unsettle any fixed, stationary view of his work and each piece invites the viewer’s eye to wander freely after each fluid motion. Saturated with intensity, Plansky’s canvases burst from their frames and refracts luscious color into their surroundings vividly illustrating his passionate love and obsession for paint.
A catalog with an essay by Bryce Brown accompanies the exhibition.
Born in 1951, Plansky studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art and the New York Studio School. His work is represented in the collections of the Asheville Art Museum, the Arkansas Arts Center and Hobart and William Smith College among others. Plansky currently teaches at the Maryland Institute of Art and resides in New York.
