Chosen Object

The Fischbach Gallery is pleasesd to present Chosen Object recent paintings of Texas-born Glen Holland. The exhibition opens November 17 and continues through 17 December 2005.
The still-life paintings of Glen Holland infuse ordinary objects--lemons, apples, onions, carnations, glass vases, etc.---with a mysterious but subdued tension. As the artist explains: "The still life format is the stage upon which the objects of the material world interact. The choice of the still life symbolizes my concern for the small things of life, the ordinary events that I believe might hold the answers." Holland utilizes a dramatic chiaroscuro descended from Caravaggio, creating startling contrasts between objects and their background through a dynamic illumination. This simple motif imbues an almost divine aura to the chosen objects, while allowing Holland to demonstrate his mastery in replicating the glint of light on surface texture.
